Cutting and Sectioning Metallographic Samples – What Type of Saw do I Need?

Sectioning machines (enclosed abrasive saws) come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and methods for cutting.  They can be as simple as a manual saw, like what you might find at a hardware store, or they can be large, complex, and automated, like something you’d see in a machine shop or factory.

Selecting what type of saw you need isn’t always as straightforward as you think. With so many variations of equipment, it’s easy to get confused. The most helpful tool is knowing what samples you want to cut.

Manual Machines

LECO's CX300L Sectioning Machine

Manual saws are just that: manually operated. That does not mean that they are not as effective. The CX300M is a “manual” saw but is by no means basic or ineffective.  For cutting smaller samples, manual saws use simplicity to their advantage to cut more quickly with less complexity.  Small samples can be cut in just a few seconds, and the additional benefits of automation may not be required.  Simply secure your sample to the cutting table, power on the saw, and cut down through it with a “chop” motion.

Manual Saws are best for small samples in a variety of materials, i.e. sheet metals, fasteners, and small welds.

Another method of cutting with a sectioning machine is by using a movable table to push the sample into a fixed-height abrasive cutting wheel.  This is what LECO calls a linear table cut and is available on an upgraded model, the CX300L.  This model can do the chop cutting that the CX300M can do and adds this linear cut capability.  Linear cutting allows the user to cut much larger samples with more control. Operators will use the wheel on the front of the machine to control the table movement.

Linear Table Saws are best for large samples & longitudinal (lengthwise) cuts.

Automatic Machines

LECO CX Series Metallography Saw - Automated Model

When a sectioning machine boasts the ability to do automatic cutting, it means that there are motors built into the machine to execute the cut without a user.  The LECO CX300A does this by motorizing the linear table cut featured in the CX300L model. With LECO automation, users can create simple programs to cut samples consistently every time. They can control the exact speed of the table movement, set limits to the motor load, and use a pulse cut mode to cut large samples effectively without pinching; all without needing to babysit the machine. This frees up time for the operator to complete other tasks, improving productivity in the lab.

Automatic Saws are best for large samples, hard materials, and high-volume, repetitive cuts.
